For veterinarians, this is part of their daily life, driven by immense compassion for animals.
However, these caring professionals often face tough decisions that push them to their limits.
One vet encountered such a situation when an owner made a heartbreaking request.
Despite his vast experience, this case wasn’t easy for him, but he ultimately made the best possible decision.
aHeart-Wrenching Dilemma

Dr. Oliver Reeve, co-founder of Onewa Road Veterinary Hospital and a seasoned veterinarian, was taken aback one day when an owner brought in a seven-week-old Golden Doodle named Toby, asking for euthanasia. Toby had a birth defect, and the owner felt euthanizing him was the only option.
Though shocked, Dr. Reeve chose not to judge the owner, understanding how difficult it was to make such a decision.
“The owner sought veterinary care for a puppy in pain, which was brave,” Dr. Reeve told Newsweek. “It’s far better than those who abandon unwanted animals.”
Regaining his composure, Dr. Reeve quickly began to explore a potential solution.
A New Chance at Life

Although Dr. Reeve didn’t disclose Toby’s exact defect, he believed he could fix it. Confident that his wife wouldn’t mind adding another pet to their already full house of rescues, he offered the owner an alternative: surrender Toby to him instead of euthanizing him.
The owner readily agreed, and Toby’s life was spared.
“Surrender isn’t often an option, as vet staff are often overwhelmed with animals,” Dr. Reeve said. “But that day, Toby got lucky.”
That very evening, Toby found himself in a new home, surrounded by love. Soon after, he underwent two successful surgeries.

“The final surgery will have to wait until he’s older,” Dr. Reeve explained optimistically.
A Brighter Future Ahead

In just a few days, Toby went from facing euthanasia to having a bright future, thanks to Dr. Reeve’s compassion.
Dr. Reeve has big plans for Toby – he’ll be the clinic’s “vet dog,” receiving endless love from staff.
At home, Dr. Reeve is teaching him not to chase rabbits and has introduced him to his other dog, Danni. The two quickly became friends, as shared on Dr. Reeve’s X account @FeltonR.

In the end, Dr. Reeve was overjoyed that his decision saved Toby’s life.
Though making choices for animals’ welfare is his job, this one felt especially rewarding.
