A woman with two large and fluffy dogs often shares how people mistake them for bears when spotted on the street. The Newfoundlands, Leo and Teddy, weigh 70 and 75 kilos, which is about the same as the average weight of a British woman. Despite towering over their 175cm tall owner, Sanela Becovic, these dogs are known for their gentle nature. Sanela bought Teddy at 10 weeks old for £1,138 and Leo at eight weeks old for £1,576. These lovable giants have become local celebrities in Laholm, Sweden, where they live with Sanela.
When Sanela takes her dogs for walks, they’re often recognized by name by locals in their small town. Despite being well-known in the community, they still capture attention from strangers who can’t resist stopping to chat and pet them. Though they resemble gentle giants, their bear-like appearance can still surprise passersby in Laholm. “Many people mistake them for bears and ask if they are real,” Sanela shared. She specifically chose Teddy for his striking bear-like look. Interestingly, the librarian, once terrified of dogs, wanted a huge, cuddly bear, and Teddy was the closest thing she found. “I used to be petrified of dogs, but during a tough time in my life, I longed for a massive bear to hug.”
Leo and Teddy, the Newfoundland terriers, are often mistaken for bears due to their large size and shaggy fur.
In a photo, Teddy is seen tipping the scales at 75 kilos, roughly the weight of an average British woman.
Before getting Teddy, Sanela, 44, had a fear of dogs. However, she longed for a big, fluffy companion, and Teddy was the closest thing to achieving that.
Sanela and her husband, Thomas Petterson, share their home in Laholm, Sweden, with their beloved dogs. Sanela fell in love with Newfoundlands because of their gentle nature and fluffy coats. They go to great lengths to pamper their furry friends, even customizing their car to be dog-friendly. The couple spent Euro 130,000 on a new vehicle equipped with a ramp for easy access. In addition, they rented a larger flat with an extra bedroom for the dogs, costing Euro 400 more per month. Sanela is dedicated to providing the best for her pups, treating them like her own children. Although she acknowledges the high costs of caring for Newfoundlands, she believes it’s worth it for the love and joy they bring into their lives.
