In October 2018, Taka, an eight-year-old Shiba Inu, faced a life-altering event. A house fire left him severely burned, and his road to recovery was challenging and painful.
Yet, thanks to the unwavering support of veterinary staff and volunteer doctors, Taka received the love and care he needed to heal. Now, as he celebrates his 5th birthday, Taka dedicates his life to comforting burn victims and sharing his strength with others in need.
A Journey of Healing
The fire that injured Taka left him with severe burns requiring extensive medical treatment. He was brought to Care More Animal Hospital in Martinez, Georgia, where he spent months in recovery. The veterinary staff at the hospital worked tirelessly to treat his injuries and provide him with the love he needed to heal. Additionally, doctors from the Joseph M. Still Burn Center volunteered to assist in Taka’s recovery, offering him specialized care.
Finding a Forever Home
After months of intensive care, Taka found his forever home in January with Crystal Lesley, a vet tech at Care More Animal Hospital. During his recovery, Lesley formed a special bond with Taka and felt he was meant to be part of her family. “He’s mine, and I just feel like he was meant to be mine,” she shared, expressing her deep connection with him.
From Survivor to Therapy Dog
Having received so much compassion from others, Taka is now ready to give back. He is training to become a therapy dog, supporting burn victims at a burn center. His scars tell a story of resilience, and his presence offers hope to those who face similar challenges. Taka is being trained by Mandy Foster of Canine Training Project, and despite his age, he’s excelling. “He’s nine years old, and he has flown through his training. He’s brilliant,” Foster told WRDW.
Training and Certification
Currently, Taka is mastering basic commands and distraction training as he works toward his American Kennel Club (AKC) Canine Good Citizen certification. Once he earns this, he’ll start the specialized training needed for therapy dogs. Taka’s transformation from burn victim to therapy dog showcases his remarkable strength and determination.
Celebrating Taka’s 5th Birthday
As Taka turns five, his story continues to inspire. His birthday marks not just a celebration of his life but a tribute to his incredible journey from severely injured to a beacon of hope. His family plans to celebrate with a dog-friendly cake, new toys, and a joyful day at the park.
Taka’s journey reminds us of the resilience of animals and the powerful impact of love and compassion on their lives. As he continues his training, Taka stands as a symbol of hope and inspiration for burn victims.
Looking Forward
With each day, Taka moves closer to becoming a certified therapy dog, ready to offer comfort and support. His story is a powerful reminder of the human-animal bond and the amazing transformations that love can bring.
Happy 5th birthday, Taka! Your journey inspires us all, and we look forward to seeing the difference you will make in the lives of others.
