A mother and son traveled hundreds of miles to reunite a beloved dog named Piper with her original family. When Becca Brown’s husband, a U.S. Air Force member, was deployed to Germany in 2018, the family of five had to relocate to Europe, but they couldn’t bring Piper with them.
Piper, a three-year-old blue heeler-Labrador mix, loved her family deeply, and they loved her too, but they had to make the tough decision to leave her behind. Although they wished to keep Piper, they didn’t want to take her away from her new caretakers later on, causing heartache.
“It didn’t need to be temporary,” Becca told the Pensacola News Journal. “We didn’t want someone to love her and then take her away three years later.” So, they arranged for Piper to live in Kansas with a man she connected well with.
The man provided updates about Piper, and the Browns felt reassured that she was happy in her new home. Imagine their shock when a vet in Oklahoma called, informing them that Piper had been found wandering the streets.
“We were stunned,” Becca said. “It wasn’t at all what we expected. Last we heard, she was doing well… we didn’t expect this.” Carla Olmstead’s son had found Piper a month earlier when she hopped into his car and refused to leave.
Piper fit in wonderfully with the Olmstead family, bonding with their cats and dogs. They immediately fell in love with her. “She’s the sweetest, most well-mannered dog we’ve ever met,” Olmstead shared on Facebook.
Realizing Piper must have belonged to a loving owner, they checked for a microchip. After a few unsuccessful attempts to contact the owners, they finally connected with the Browns. The Browns were overjoyed, and the Olmsteads gladly took a trip to Florida to reunite Piper with her former family, now living in Pensacola.
Olmstead shared updates and even posted a heartwarming video of Piper’s reunion. Though Piper was initially shy and missed her rescuers, she soon adapted to her “new old” life, surrounded by her human triplet siblings and a family who adores her.
