On a day meant to celebrate, we were saddened to learn that sweet Nelly passed away while we were preparing to honor her birthday.
Meeting Nelly
We first met Nelly around this time last year. She was brought to our Ophthalmology Service late one evening with acute onset glaucoma. Like in humans, glaucoma is a serious condition where pressure builds up in the eye, damaging the optic nerve and causing significant pain. If untreated, it can lead to severe vision loss or blindness.
Nelly’s Treatment Journey
In May of last year, our Ophthalmologist, Heidi, performed surgery to remove Nelly’s eye, alleviating her pain and preventing further complications. Nelly displayed remarkable bravery and resilience throughout the process. Her loving family stood by her, ensuring she had a joyful and fulfilling life despite the challenges she faced.
A Bittersweet Birthday
As we were preparing to celebrate Nelly’s birthday and share her inspiring journey, we received heartbreaking news: Nelly had passed away. Her family reached out, filled with sorrow, to share how much she meant to them. They spoke of Nelly’s loving, gentle nature and how she had brought endless joy to their lives.
