Faust, a loyal and courageous German Shepherd, served as an Explosives Detection and Patrol dog for the BNSF Railway Police Force in Texas for eight years. Alongside his handler, Senior Special Agent Bryan Schaffer, Faust dedicated his life to protecting the community, always ready to respond with unwavering commitment.
In recognition of his extraordinary service, Faust received a heartfelt send-off as he embarked on his well-deserved retirement. The emotional farewell ceremony highlighted the deep bond between Faust and his handler, as well as the lasting impact Faust made on everyone he served.
On March 3, 2017, Faust’s last day of work, he rode in his patrol vehicle with his beloved handler, unaware of the emotional tribute awaiting him. As per tradition, Faust received his final radio call—a moment filled with gratitude and respect for his years of dedication. The dispatcher honored Faust with these words:
“K-9 partner Faust just completed his last shift after serving as an Explosions Detection and Police Service canine for eight years and one day, and he is now officially retired. Faust, thank you for your service to the BNSF Railway, the communities you’ve served, and most importantly, for serving and protecting your handler. Now, we wish you a well, healthy, and happy retirement. Radio clear.”
As the final call echoed through the radio, Faust whimpered, and his handler, overwhelmed with emotion, leaned over to give his loyal partner a kiss. This touching moment, captured on video, has resonated with many, garnering over 720,000 views on YouTube.
Special Agent Bryan Schaffer later shared his heartfelt appreciation for Faust’s unwavering loyalty, stating, “Faust, thank you for all the good you have done for BNSF and other agencies—but mostly I thank you for getting us both home safe after every shift.”
After his retirement, Faust became a permanent member of the Schaffer family. Sadly, he passed away in 2020 at the age of 13, but his legacy lives on. Faust was inducted into the We Ride to Provide (WRTP) Hall of Fame, cementing his place in the hearts of those who knew and admired him.
Faust’s story is a powerful reminder of the incredible bond between K-9 officers and their handlers—a bond built on trust, loyalty, and unconditional love.
