Animals provide vital emotional support to their caretakers, and Robert Downey Jr., famed for his role as Iron Man in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, has long showcased his love for them. The superhero’s gentle side shines through his deep bond with his dogs.
In addition to his iconic role, Robert played Doctor Dolittle, a veterinarian with the ability to communicate with animals—an experience that likely resonated with him, as he shares his Malibu home with a variety of rescued pets.
Alongside his wife, Susan, Robert adopted two cats who quickly became cherished family members: Monty and D’Artagnan. He openly admits that life without his rescued animals feels unimaginable.
In 2017, he rescued Moly, a black cat in need of a loving home, providing her with the safety and affection she had missed. Moly is now social and outgoing, thriving in the warmth of her family.
Susan notes that D’Artagnan can be hard to read, often leaving them unsure if he’s happy or sad. Although he’s labeled a sleepy cat, he interacts well with the other animals in the household.
Initially hesitant to adopt rescued animals due to the emotional toll of their plight, Robert found himself unable to resist bringing them home. Now, he believes he couldn’t live without them.
The Downeys also have alpacas, which resemble llamas, kept as pets in their expansive green backyard—a space where the animals can play freely, reminiscent of their natural habitats.
Their sustainable garden has attracted attention, incorporating a variety of rescued animals, including goats, chickens, pigs, and cows, creating a sanctuary filled with life.
After learning about animal abuse, Robert chose to adopt a vegan lifestyle. He praised his wife’s talents as a producer during the premiere of Doctor Dolittle, stating, “She’s the most incredible creative producer in film history, while I just make funny faces for money. I’m adopting a plant-based diet.”
Additionally, he founded the Footprint Coalition, aiming to combine robotics and nanotechnology to clean up the planet. His decision to become vegan aligns with this mission, as livestock processing is a significant contributor to climate change and ocean pollution.
Similarly, Ruby Rose, known for her role as Batwoman, is an advocate for animal rights and the environment, having also adopted a vegan lifestyle after learning about animal cruelty.
She shared her past experience with shark fin soup, recalling her devastation upon realizing the truth behind it and the horrors faced by sharks.
Fans of Robert Downey Jr. and fellow advocates for animal and environmental rights applaud his efforts, finding inspiration in his actions and dedication to making a difference.
