She didn’t choose the street life. She was abandoned.
But when labor began, it was too late to find shelter. Babies were on their way, and she needed every ounce of strength to bring them into the world.
Heartbroken, exhausted, and on the verge of collapse…
This abandoned dog mother embodied both the fragility and strength that come with motherhood.
Will her story have a happy ending? Will all this suffering finally lead to something good?
Good Job, Momma—The Puppies Are Here
The sight of this exhausted mother dog lying helplessly beside her newborn puppies broke my heart. The image cried out for help, showing a mother who had nothing left to give.
Her previous owners had abandoned her, likely because she was pregnant. Left without proper food, water, or shelter, she wandered the streets, searching for a safe place to give birth. But labor came unexpectedly, and she ended up giving birth right on the street, on a piece of cardboard.
Six puppies were born, but sadly, two were already angels by the time their mother brought them into the world.
Despite her extreme exhaustion, when she saw people approaching, the mother dog mustered her last bit of strength to protect her remaining puppies. She didn’t know these people were there to help. In her defensiveness, she acted aggressively, attacking the rescue team three times before they managed to capture her and her pups and bring them to safety.
A Glimmer of Hope
Back at the shelter, the rescuers were relieved to find that the mother had enough milk to feed her puppies. Now, it was time to care for her. Starving and utterly drained, she devoured three meals that day—about 5 pounds of liver—showing just how desperate she had been for nourishment.
After 48 critical hours, the puppies were thriving. They began growing, opening their eyes, and experiencing the joys of puppyhood. The mother, while still traumatized and nervous around people, was slowly recovering. In time, she would learn to trust humans again.
If it weren’t for the kind-hearted rescuers, this brave mother and her puppies might not have survived. After so much hardship, the mother dog finally found the care and love she deserved.
We may not be able to save every stray dog or solve all the world’s problems, but we can make a difference, even in small ways. By chipping in, feeding a stray, or supporting rescue efforts, we can help reduce the number of dogs in need.
