Duncan, a 12-year-old boy, got lost in a junkyard one day, sliding under a dumpster and laying down, feeling tired and hopeless.
A worker spotted him and quickly provided food and water, noticing his blindness and poor condition. Although her boss wanted to call animal control, she knew Duncan wouldn’t last long in a public shelter, so she immediately contacted a relief group.
Hope for Paws responded and rushed to the dump to save Duncan. Despite offers of food, he remained lost and confused, prompting them to act quickly.
Duncan didn’t resist as they placed a leash around his neck, allowing them to gently pull him out from under the trash; he was simply too old, blind, and sick to fight back.
Once free, it became evident how neglected he had been, with a rope around his neck indicating he had once been owned but was let down.
In the car on the way to the vet, Duncan welcomed their gentle touch, perhaps experiencing affection for the first time in years. His rescuers expressed their sorrow, saying, “I’m so sorry to whoever did this to you,” captured in a video of his escape.
At the vet, the doctor confirmed Duncan’s blindness and noted skin issues, ulcers, and two tumors. Although the recommendation was to euthanize him to end his suffering, Duncan’s rescuers chose a different path, determined to show him what love feels like after years of neglect.
