In the quiet corners of Baldwin Park Shelter in Los Angeles, a senior dog named Jelly found herself in a desperate situation.
At 14 years old, Jelly, a Chihuahua mix, was blind, partially deaf, and burdened with numerous medical issues. Her world was shattered when her owner surrendered her to the shelter. For any dog, this would be heartbreaking, but for Jelly, who relied heavily on her remaining senses, it was especially devastating.
The Encounter That Changed Everything
Elaine Seamans, a devoted volunteer at Baldwin Park Shelter and founder of At-Choo Foundation, came across Jelly’s story through a series of heart-wrenching photos. There was something about Jelly that pulled at her heartstrings, compelling her to meet the senior dog face-to-face.
“She affected my heart,” Seamans shared with The Dodo. When she finally met Jelly, she was met with an unexpected response. Despite all her struggles, Jelly showered Seamans with kisses, never hesitating or showing fear. “She needed love, and to hear and feel the heartbeat of someone holding her,” Seamans said, deeply moved by Jelly’s trust and affection.
A New Beginning
Seamans knew she couldn’t adopt Jelly herself but was determined to find her a loving home. She posted Jelly’s story on social media, hoping to reach someone who could give the senior dog the care she needed. The post caught the attention of Carlynne McDonnell, founder and CEO of Barkee Laroux’s House of Love Animal Sanctuary.
Seeing Jelly’s photos, McDonnell was overcome with emotion. “I thought, ‘Oh my god. She’s so pitiful — we can’t leave her there,’” she said. However, Jelly’s medical needs presented a significant financial challenge. That’s when At-Choo Foundation stepped in again, offering to cover Jelly’s medical expenses if McDonnell could rescue her.
Finding Forever Home
With the financial burden eased, McDonnell drove two hours to Baldwin Park Shelter to pick up Jelly. The moment she held her, McDonnell knew she wasn’t letting Jelly go. “She was in a little blanket, and I put my arms around her, and it was just the most amazing feeling,” McDonnell shared.
Initially planning to foster Jelly, McDonnell quickly realized that Jelly had found her forever home. “I knew the moment I touched her,” she said. Jelly was adopted and brought to McDonnell’s home, where she finally received the love and care she had always deserved.
A Birthday to Remember
Today, as Jelly celebrates her birthday, the day is filled with love, joy, and gratitude. For a dog who endured so much hardship, her journey to a safe and loving home is nothing short of miraculous. In her new environment, Jelly has started to explore her surroundings, a sign of growing trust and comfort. “When a blind and deaf dog begins to explore her surroundings, it shows she’s starting to feel at ease,” McDonnell said. “That is the greatest reward in the world.”
