Prejudice is all too common in the world, and animals, especially dogs, often bear the brunt of it. Among the most pervasive stereotypes is the belief that Pit Bulls are unadoptable, leading many to overlook these dogs entirely. As a result, countless Pit Bulls are left to fend for themselves, unwanted and unloved.
But not everyone shares this view. Caitlyn, a woman from Charlotte, North Carolina, proved this when she opened her heart and home to a Pit Bull without hesitation. Her decision changed the dog’s life forever.
A Rough Beginning
When Caitlyn found Liv, a black Pit Bull, she was a stray in dire condition—severely underweight, her stomach sagging from overbreeding, and her ears bent back from what appeared to be a botched cropping attempt. Despite already having a Pit Bull at home, Caitlyn was immediately drawn to Liv’s sad eyes, which spoke volumes about her past suffering.
Caitlyn quickly decided to become Liv’s foster mom, writing on Instagram, “We are excited to announce we have started our next adventure, but this one isn’t a road trip! We are fostering Liv! ❤️ This sweet little girl is still taking some time to adjust. She is very skittish & nervous, but loves to sit in my lap and will literally hold my hand all day long!”
Liv’s adjustment wasn’t easy, but Caitlyn’s love and patience began to work wonders.
A New Beginning, Thanks to Tot
“Baby Liv may be little, but she has a HUGE heart,” Caitlyn shared in another post. “I have watched her transform in less than a week with us from a terrified girl who would barely wag her tail to stealing Tot’s toys, pushing him out of the doorway to go first, and chasing us through the house.”
Tot, Caitlyn’s other Pit Bull, played a crucial role in Liv’s recovery. Though Tot was usually selective about other dogs, he and Liv formed an instant bond. Caitlyn recalled a moment when Liv accidentally escaped her gate and met Tot. To her relief, the dogs immediately began to play, sealing their friendship.
The bond between Liv and Tot was so strong that Caitlyn decided Liv was no longer just a foster dog—she was a permanent part of the family. From that day forward, Liv became Sweet Pea, a name fitting her new life filled with love and security.
Sweet Pea’s Transformation
Since joining Caitlyn’s family, Sweet Pea has undergone five surgeries, including one to remove a visible scar on her face. With her physical wounds healed, Sweet Pea began a new chapter, blossoming into a loving and affectionate dog who cherishes her family above all else.
Caitlyn shared that Sweet Pea never goes on walks unless both she and Tot are with her. Whether at home or visiting Caitlyn’s mom at work, Sweet Pea always stays close to her loved ones, never straying far from the people who gave her a second chance.
Sweet Pea’s journey is a powerful testament to the transformative power of love. She rose above her past, finding strength in her new family, and proving that love can overcome even the strongest prejudices. All it takes is finding the right people.
