When a dog named Monster fell off a shrimp boat, her owner feared she was lost forever — but days later, a miracle occurred as the determined dog swam her way back to shore.
Keith “Kiwi” Soffes, a shrimp boat captain from San Leon, Texas, has a deep bond with Monster, who never leaves his side and joins him on every trip out to sea.
However, one recent outing took a heartbreaking turn when Monster fell overboard. Although she was familiar with the water, having been on the boat with Keith since she was a puppy, and the day was calm, Monster suddenly disappeared without a trace.
Keith searched desperately, hoping to find her, but soon feared the worst. “I lost the one thing in this world that I truly loved,” he wrote, “completely heartbroken.”
He shared the story on social media, holding onto hope that Monster would somehow return. The post received an outpouring of support and prayers from people online.
Then, five days after Monster went missing, Keith received incredible news: Monster was alive and had survived an incredible journey.
According to FOX 26 Houston, Monster swam an astonishing five to six miles to shore across Galveston Bay.
She was found days later after reaching land, leaving Keith in shock. “I thought, ‘There’s no way she could’ve made that swim,’” he told FOX 26. “That dog swam for that long?”
After spending so many anxious days apart, Keith and Monster’s reunion was filled with overwhelming emotion.
“I was crying so hard I couldn’t even speak,” Keith recalled. “She was giving me so many kisses.”
Now, Monster is safely back home. While Keith is still emotionally drained from the ordeal, Monster appears unfazed by her long journey.
“She acts like nothing even happened,” Keith shared on Facebook, alongside a photo of Monster sleeping peacefully. “She goes to sleep happy as a jaybird … I think she might’ve jumped off just to get on TV,” he joked.
“But I still love her, and I’m so glad my little friend is back.”
Keith is taking steps to ensure this never happens again: he plans to outfit Monster with a tracking device and life jacket for future boat trips.
