Sora, a black Labrador-Pitbull mix, first came to the Valley Animal Center in Fresno, California, nearly four years ago. This shelter, the largest no-kill facility in the area, provides a safe haven for dogs and cats. Sora ended up there after her previous owner surrendered her, realizing they couldn’t give her the attention and training she needed.
Since then, Sora has spent her days waiting, sadly overlooked by potential adopters. Despite being a sweet and energetic dog, she never seemed to catch anyone’s eye—until recently, when it appeared that she might finally be getting her forever home.
Adopted After 900+ Days at the Shelter
The staff at Valley Animal Center was overjoyed when someone expressed interest in adopting Sora. After spending almost four years in the shelter, it seemed like she was finally going to find the loving home she deserved.
Sora was thrilled, too, thinking she had found her forever family. However, her joy was short-lived. Less than 24 hours after taking her home, the new owner called the shelter to return her. Sora’s dream of a forever home was shattered, leaving her heartbroken once again.
The shelter explained that Sora wasn’t given enough time to adjust to her new environment and was introduced to new family members too quickly. This sudden change overwhelmed her, leading to the heartbreaking return.
Returned and Heartbroken
Despite this setback, the Valley Animal Center remains hopeful that Sora’s perfect match is still out there. They know that living in a shelter, no matter how caring, can never truly replace the love and stability of a real home. Sora’s extended stay at the shelter has taken a toll on her, causing her to develop anxious behaviors.
However, the shelter’s certified dog trainer, Mariah Prudhume, believes that with the right home, Sora’s mental health could dramatically improve. With love and patience, Sora could transform into the happy, playful dog she’s meant to be.
Sora is still looking for her forever home—one where she’ll be cherished and never given up on again. She’s great with humans and children over five years old but needs to be the only pet in the household. She also needs a family willing to dedicate time to train her and help her feel safe and loved.
